POLICE HOLD BURGLAR AT BAY IN SPORTS STORE -- Toronto police spotlights and tear gas probe a sporting goods store at York and Wellington Streets this evening as a cornered, desperate burglar is caught in the act, August 18, 1965. Police used taxi as a shield after suspect was surprised in the Harry B. Kennedy sporting goods store. Officers, one of them wearing a gas mask, others kneeling and lying on the road, dodged pellets from a 12 gauge shotgun as man attempted to fight his way out, but finally captured him by using tear gas. Globe and Mail photographer Boris Spremo lay flat on the ground, behind police cruiser, to record this scene. This picture was awarded the CP Picture of the Month.
