For the first time in 25 years, all public transportation in New York is completely shut down as the city and the unions were unable to find an agreement and the Transit Workers Union went on strike.
Even though strike is illegal in the US and the workers are faced with a two days pay by non worked day fine, plus legal pursuit and other fines, New York's mass transit structure is at a complete stop from today on.
The only other means of transportation in the city, besides feet, were taxi cabs, whose prices have been hiked up to a flat fee per zone system instead of the usual metered ride, and cars but with the High Occupancy Vehicule policy raised from two to four passengers minimum for access to the city, creating almost never seen before traffic jams at all bridges and tunnels accessing Manhattan during rush hour.
Pictured here the line of cabs, stretching for almost 2 blocks, by Pennsylvania station, where the Long Island Rail Road and the Amtrak trains are still running as usual and bringing their flow of workers and tourists into the city.
