CHAIM HERZOG

Israeli President Chaim Herzog unveils a monument during a visit to the site of the Bergen-Belsen Nazi concentration camp in Bergen-Belsen, Germany, in this April 1987 photo. Herzog, Israel's longest-serving president as well as a distinguished soldier, author and diplomat, died today. He was 78. Herzog suffered heart failure after contracting pneumonia during a recent visit to the United States, said Rachel Sofer, spokeswoman of Tel Hashomer Hospital in Tel Aviv.
