MARY TWO-AXE EARLEY

Mary Two-Axe Earley, 79, was almost single-handedly responsible for restoring native rights to Indian women in Canada who'd been disenfranchised by marriage to non-natives. Eighteen years of lobbying paid off in 1985 when Bill C-31 amended the Indian Act, righting a century of wrong. The full-blooded Mohawk lost her rights when she married a non-native in 1938. (Ottawa Citizen/Paul Latour)
