RWANDA REFUGEE

A Hutu refugee with opened macete wounds on his head stands amidst a group of hundreds of fellow refugees who remain surrounded by the Tutsi Army Thursday April 27, 1995, in the school compound of Kibeho, southern Rwanda. Rwandas top leaders traveled Thursday to the refugee camp where thousands were killed last week to try to persuade 600 people holed up there to go home peacefully. Saturday's bloodshed occurred while the Rwandan army was trying to close the Kibeho camp, which the government considereda center for extremist Hutu miltitias. At leats 2,000 people were killed by army gunfire or trampled in a stampede. (AP PHOTO/ Jean-Marc Bouju)
