Vatican God's Bankers
File -- In this file photo taken in Milan on Dec. 3, 1984, Italian financier Michele Sindona smiles from behind the bars of the defendants cage during the preliminary hearing of the trial for the collapse of an Italian bank. Michele Sindona, a Sicilian working in Milan, gained the confidence of future Pope Paul VI by helping his successful efforts to woo Milanese workers away from the Communist party to the pro-church Christian Democrats in the 1960s. A successful financier, he was appointed by the Pope in 1969 to manage the Vatican's foreign investments. Sindona's own banking empire collapsed and his links to the mob were exposed, sending him to prison and his eventual death from poisoned coffee. (AP Photo/Ferdinando Meazza)
