Italy Obit Pino Daniele

FILE - In this Thursday, Feb. 19, 2008 file photo, Pino Daniele Performs during the "Festival di Sanremo" Italian song contest, in San Remo, Italy. inger, songwriter and guitarist Pino Daniele, whose fusion of blues and jazz was greatly inspired by the beauty and ugliness of his native Naples, has died. He was 59. Carlo Saitto, an official at Sant'Eugenio hospital in Rome, told Italian state TV that Daniele died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2015, night soon after arriving with grave cardiac and respiratory problems. Daniele, with a history of heart trouble, had given a New Year's concert in Italy last week. The musician was so identified with Naples that the city's mayor ordered flags flown at half-mast. Daniele's style was constantly evolving, as he experimented with blues and jazz. His voice, sexy, bordering on hoarse, was expressive, like his fellow Neapolitans. Some of his songs mixed Neapolitan dialect with Italian. He played with jazz stars like Wayne Shorter. (AP Photo/Antonio Calanni, File)
