Citizen Spies Alaska

FILE - This June 20, 1951, file photo FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, left, and Attorney General J. Howard McGrath confer on the government's roundup of Communist party officials in Washington. Each of the 17 seized was described by Hoover as a "prominent, active functionary of the communist party, U.S.A." The FBI charged 17 plus another four they sought out with plotting the violent overthrow of the United States government. In 1950 the Russian invasion of Alaska seem like a real possibility. Hoover teamed up on a highly classified project, code-named “Washtub,” with the newly created Air Force Office of Special Investigations, headed by his one-time protege and former FBI official Joseph F. Carroll. “Washtub” operated from 1951-59, according to Deborah Kidwell, official historian of the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, or OSI. (AP Photo/Byron Rollins)
