Air Force Milestone

FILE In this May 17,1959 file photo showing President Dwight D. Eisenhower shaking hands with Denver police officers after bidding farewell to political and military dignitaries at Denver's Lowry Air Force Base. The last military unit at the former Lowry Air Force Base in Denver is moving out, a milestone in the conversion of the site to a civilian neighborhood of homes, schools and shops. The Air Reserve Personnel Center, which handles personnel records for nearly 1 million Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard members, is going just six miles east to Buckley Air Force Base. It's the last vestige of a once-booming base that trained pilots and missile crews, served as the summer White House for President Eisenhower and housed the Air Force Academy until its Colorado Springs campus was ready.
