GERMANY GUENTER GRASS

** FILE ** Renowned German author Guenter Grass, who received a Nobel laureate in 1999, smokes a pipe in front of his house in Luebeck, northern Germany, in this June 25, 1997 file photo, after his house was smeared with swastikas the night before. The novelist admitted in an interview that he served in the Waffen SS, the combat arm of Adolf Hitler's dreaded paramilitary forces, during World War II, German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported. The renowned newspaper ran an interview on Saturday, Aug 12. 2006, with the Nobel Prize winner. In it, Grass discusses a memoir about his youth and the war years, slated for publication next month.
