Officer On Duty Damaged Destruction Violence Rubble

Endangered Historic Places-Photo Gallery

FILE - In this May 13, 1963 file photo, police officers patrol past the Gaston Motel, a black motel in Birmingham, Ala., where dynamite dug a large hole in the wall, right, and destroyed eight mobile homes on an adjacent sales lot. The incident set off large scale rioting in the black section. The motel was identified by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as one of America’s 11 most endangered historic places.
