Egypt Demonstrations 1956

This crowd of waving and banner-carrying Egyptians wildly cheered Egyptian President Nasser in Cairo on July 28, 1956, when he spoke about the government’s naturalization of the Suez canal and declared his government would proceed against all foreign interests. Nasser warned that any foreign “interference” may cause obstruction to navigation in the vital 103-mile long waterway. During the day crowds paraded through Cairo streets, shouting anti-Western, pro-Russian slogans. (AP Photo)
