AP Explains-Confederate Flag

FILE - In this Monday, Oct. 9, 1967, file photo, Raymond Roberts raises a Confederate flag on the back of a pickup truck across the street from the federal building in Meridian, Miss., where his brother Alton Wayne Roberts and 17 others went on trial on conspiracy charges in the 1964 slaying of three civil rights workers. The Confederate battle flag has been removed from South Carolina's Statehouse grounds, in the wake of the massacre of nine African-Americans, including a state senator, at an historic black church in Charleston in June 2015. Part of the Confederate flag's design is incorporated into the Mississippi state flag and civil rights groups have long viewed it as a symbol of a brutally oppressive past. (AP Photo/File)
