VATICAN WARTIME POPE

In this Oct. 15, 1943 file photo, men, women and soldiers gather around Pope Pius XII, his arms outstretched during his inspection tour of Rome, Italy, after the Aug. 13 American air raid in World War II. The Vatican plans to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of the controversial World War II Pope Pius XII. The Vatican has often defended Pius from charges that he remained largely silent in the face of the Holocaust. Vatican officials told a news conference Tuesday, June 17, 2008, that a convention to discuss Pius' teaching and influence on the church will be held in November in Rome. The Vatican also plans a photo exhibit this fall covering highlights of his 19-year-long pontificate. He died in 1958. (AP Photo)
