Back to Nagasaki

** FILE ** In this Aug. 9, 1945, file photo, a giant column of smoke rises more than 60,000 feet into the air, after the second atomic bomb ever used in warfare explodes over the Japanese port town of Nagasaki. In 1945, workers at a remote, top-secret reactor built amid Washington state's windblown sagebrush produced plutonium for a devastating new bomb to be dropped on the Japanese city. Across the world, 15-year-old Kazuko Ozaki narrowly missed the atomic bomb that destroyed the port city of Nagasaki that August, effectively ending World War II. Decades later, Ozaki's daughter, Shirley Olinger, is a nuclear engineer overseeing cleanup at the now-highly contaminated Hanford nuclear reservation in Washington state. (AP Photo/File)
