Lupe Velez

FILE - In this March 1944 file photo, Mexican movie actress Lupe Velez sits in a Hollywood restaurant. Before Salma Hayek and Kate del Castillo there was Lupe Velez, a Mexican actress who conquered Hollywood and whose death was as striking as her enigmatic life. After filming 40 movies between 1927 and 1944, she committed suicide at 36, while pregnant. Captivated by her story, Mexican author Celia del Palacio wrote “Hollywood era el cielo,” or "Hollywood Was Heaven," a novelized biography of Velez published by Suma de Letras on June 1, 2014.
