OBIT MCCARTY

Oseola McCarty, of Hattiesburg, Miss., a humble washerwoman with a sixth grade education and enormous generosity that made her a national folk celebrity, seen in this June 1995 photo, died at her Hattiesburg home, Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999. She was 91. Having quit school at age twelve to care for a sick aunt, she began taking in laundry for a living. For the next seventy-five years, she worked hard, and amassed a small fortune. Then she gave a portion of her life-savings to the University of Southern Mississippi. (AP Photo/Steve Coleman)
