FILM-HEYSEL-REQUIEM

A view of casualties in the Brussels Heysel Stadium in this photo May 29, 1985 after fans clashed and 39 people were killed at the European Cup final match between Liverpool and Juventus. Twenty years have passed since 39 soccer fans were trampled to death at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels, site of the European Cup final between England’s Liverpool and Italy’s Juventus. But time has not eased the gut-wrenching footage of what happened that day - or why the tragedy occurred. Belgian filmmaker Lodes Desmet revisits the tragedy in Heysel ’85, Requiem for a Cup final. His 90-minute film is the closing gala Sunday at Hotdocs, the Canadian International Documemtary Festival in Toronto. (CP PICTURE ARCHIVE/AP Photo/Giuseppe Calzuola)
