THE CHASE MARIS THE MAN

Roger Maris of the New York Yankees stands by the plaque of the man whose ercord he broke, Babe Ruth, in the outfield of New York's Yankee Stadium, Sept. 10, 1961. For 34 years, baseball's most glamorous slugging record belonged to Babe Ruth, a larger-than-life, gregarious character who hit 60 home runs in 1927, and challenged anybody to match it. Maris was the complete opposite of Ruth, an introspective Midwesterner thrust in the middle of New York. (AP Photo)
