FILE - In this Aug 16, 1944 file photo, American and allied troops wade through the water from a LST (Landing Ship Tank) on an unidentified beach, east of Toulon, southern French riviera, as part of Operation Dragoon. Carried out by French and American troops, it started on August 15, 1944. In total, 350,000 French and American troops landed on the French Riviera. For Allied troops in western Europe, D-Day was just the beginning of a long and bloody push toward victory over the Nazis. Ten weeks after commemorating the 75th anniversary of the D-Day invasion in Normandy, France is paying tribute this week to Allied troops involved in another major, but often overlooked, military operation: landings on the Mediterranean coast. RAF MOSQUITO: A Royal Air Force De Havilland Mosquito aircraft in flight. 1944. The Mosquito was used in both a reconnaissance and bombing role, including operations over the German capital, Berlin. 16/10/04: More than 150 veteran airmen who flew the daring and nimble Mosquito planes during the Second World War were meeting Saturday October 16, 2004, for their final reunion. The Mosquito Aircrew Association is gathering for the last time because of the elderly age of its members. They will meet at the Royal Air Force Museum in north west London to reminisce and inspect one of the planes they used to fly. Picture part of PA Second World War collection.
