Youngsters between the age of nine and 14 play football outside the Bermondsey factory of F.M. Langford Limited, Manufacturing Chemist of Maltby Street. The children turned up to work at the factory this morning but were turned away by the factory's manager when he heard of a row that had broken over allegations that the factory employed 'child labour'. Nevertheless the children hung around hoping that they might be given jobs later at the firm. The Inner London Education Authority (ILEA) were investigating claims that children had been employed at the factory. The Authority heard about the claims after the father of a girl who said she had worked at the factory complained to the Police. Children claimed they got a half-hour lunch break and two tea-breaks of 10 minutes. Worked an eight hour day for 10/-. Children under the age of 13 are prohibited by law from working for a wage. The ILEA spokesman said that any work done by children over 13 was strictly controlled by local by-laws.
