BEAR TROUBLE

A black bear peers over a wooden fence behind a fast-food restaurant in downtown Trinidad, Colo., early Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001. The town of Trinidad is under seige, with 15 to 20 black bears a night climbing from the Purgatory River drainage or descending from the bitterly dry pinon-juniper tangles to search for food. Calls from people reporting bears on their porches, fighting with dogs, and tossing trash cans like toys are running the area's wildlife officers ragged.
