BOX Tapia Column

FILE - Johnny Tapia celebrates after beating Argentina's Eduardo Alvarez during an international featherweight boxing match in a file photo from Jan. 19, 2002, in London. Tapia, by his own count, has died six times. Another time he wanted to die but couldn’t pull the trigger of the pistol he had stuck in his mouth fast enough. Funny, because Tapia always did things fast. In the ring he threw punches nonstop from every different angle. Outside it, he was just as quick to take solace with a drug or a bottle.
