OBIT HAYES

Bob Hayes, of Florida A&M, crosses the finish line to win the 100-meter dash in a world record time of 9.1 seconds at the National AAU track and field meet in St. Louis, Missouri, in this June 21, 1963 photo. Hayes, the Olympic gold medal sprinter and Dallas Cowboys receiver who was once deemed the fastest man alive, died late Wednesday Sept. 18, 2002 in Jacksonville, Fla., according to a hospital spokeswoman. He was 59. From left are Forrest Beaty, Robert Mattis, Hayes, and Johnny Gilbert, right. Behind Hayes obscured, finishing second, is Nate Adams. (AP Photo)
