Bangladesh Workplace Safety

FILE - In this Monday, April 20, 2015 photo, Bangladeshi garment workers leave for work in Savar, near Dhaka, Bangladesh. Authorities in Bangladesh said during a five-day visit by a delegation of the U.S. Trade Representative’s office ending Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2015, they have met a set of conditions put forward by the United States for better factory safety and workers’ rights that were essential to win back preferential trade status that the impoverished South Asian nation lost in 2013 after two deadly factory disasters. The collapse of Rana Plaza and a fire at another factory, Tazreen Fashions, that same year left about 1,500 workers dead and hundreds injured. The garment industry is crucial to Bangladesh’s economy as it employs about 4 million workers, mostly rural women, and many other sectors including banks are heavily dependent on it. (AP Photo/A.M.
