SMITHSONIAN TRUNK SHOWS

Asian elephant Kandula, keeps cool, Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, with a dirt bath after taking a dip in the pool at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. In light of research showing that elephants are social, intelligent creatures that need companionship and space to roam, the American Zoo and Aquarium Association mandated that elephant facilities allot at least 1,800 square feet for a single elephant outdoors and 900 feet for each additional animal.
