School Shooting Archive Project

FILE - In this Dec. 20, 2012 file photo, Nancy Hotchkiss of Naugatuck, Conn. hangs an ornament on a tree at a memorial for the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims in Newtown, Conn., where 20 children and six educators died on Dec. 14, 2012. The town decided to keep hundreds of thousands of cards, letters, banners, stuffed animals, children’s art and other items sent to Newtown, either in its original form, as an archived photo or as recycled material that officials are calling “sacred soil.” Plans call for mixing about 2 cubic yards of the substance into construction materials to perhaps use in the foundation of a new Sandy Hook school or to help construct a permanent memorial to the massacre.
