Mideast Palestinians Obit Sarraj

In this photo taken Friday, Oct. 19, 2012, Gaza psychiatrist and prominent Palestinian human rights campaigner Dr. Eyad Sarraj, left, listens to Jewish-American scholar and activist Noam Chomsky, right, during a meeting with Palestinian youth activists at Almathaf hotel in Gaza City. Relatives say Sarraj has died after a long battle with leukemia. He was 69. Trained in Egypt and Britain, Sarraj established a community mental health program in Gaza in 1990 before becoming a human rights defender. In that role, he took on both Israel and the Palestinian self-rule government, and his biography says he was jailed by both. Sarraj won international recognition, including the Olof Palme Prize awarded by Sweden’s labor movement. (AP Photo/Adel Hana)
