PEOPLE PAYTON

Chicago Bears football great Walter Payton talks to reporters in New York, in this May 15, 1987 photo. Payton's death has helped spur organ donations in Illinois, officials say. More than 565,000 people have joined the Illinois Organ/Tissue Donor Registry since February 1999, when the NFL's all-time leading rusher announced he had a rare liver disease and needed a transplant. When Payton went public with his illness, he became an advocate for organ donation. Since his death from cancer a year ago,306,771 names have been added.(AP Photo/Marty Lederhandler)
