Remembrance Nursing Sisters 20091109

Betty Brown stands near (right to left) Speaker for the Senate Noel Kinsella, Speaker for the House of Commons Peter Milliken and Minister of Veterans Affairs Gregory Thompson during a Remembrance Week ceremony in the Senate on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Friday Nov.6, 2009. Known as the Angels of Mercy, thousands of Canadian nursing sisters travelled overseas to care for their wounded countrymen as the battles of the Second World War raged around them. For young men trying to recover from often horrific injuries in faraway places, these caring women became like surrogate mothers and sisters, easing their pain and bringing a touch of home.
