ALTA KLEIN IMPACT

FILE--New Alberta Premier Ralph Klein (left) is sworn in by Alberta Lt. Governor Gordon Towers (seated at right) at Govermnent House in Edmonton, Dec. 14, 1992. He was the hands-in-pockets, populist Everyman, the high-school dropout from Calgary’s sandpaper-tough Tuxedo Park who came to wrest power from the boardroom suits but never lost the common touch. Ralph Klein, Canada’s longest-serving current premier, will step out of the spotlight Thursday when his successor, Ed Stelmach, is sworn in as Alberta’s 13th premier.
