Sikh Refigee Anniversary

FILE--A group of refugees board buses following their arrival in Charlesville, Nova Scotia, July 12, 1987. A few swam to shore or managed to drift in on life-rafts, while many others simply grabbed onto anything that would float. Hungry, thirsty and exhausted from spending nearly three weeks crossing the Atlantic in a cramped cargo freighter, 174 South Asian refugees appeared along a secluded Nova Scotia beach 20 years ago this week. Paul Sandhu, who was just 22 at the time, says he was given a new life by a journey he says he cannot forget. (CP PICTURE ARCHIVE/Richard MacAdams)
