Mtl Building Cracks 20070826

Police cars and steel barriers block streets around The Bay department store in Montreal as workers start the process of using steel posts to stabilize a passageway from the store to the McGill Metro on Sunday, August 26, 2007. Work is progressing rapidly to shore up supports under cracks in Montreal’s underground city network. City officials said crews are working quickly to install about 1,000 posts to stabilize a 50-metre-long concrete slab above a key tunnel. Six downtown subway stations along one of the transit system’s busiest lines remain shut down as do a number of businesses in the area. (CP PHOTO/ Peter McCabe) CANADA
