Four American soldiers of General Patch's Seventh Army, part of a lost battalion who were cut off, surrounded by enemy soldiers and without food on the crest of the Vosges mountains, France, are transported to to a hospital after being relieved.They fought on for five days, aided by a steady stream of supplies dropped by 27 Thunderbolt pilots, though they were unable to retrieve many of the containers due to weakness through lack of food.October 1944 Mirrorpix/Courtesy Everett Collection
