OCTOBER 14, 1957 -- QUEEN OPENS PARLIAMENT -- Simple and brief was ceremonial which marked arrival of Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip at Parliament Buildings in Ottawa. After greeting by Prime Minister Diefenbaker and Senate Leader John Haig, they stood on a dais, framed by Gothic archway of the Peace Tower, to accept Royal Salute from guard of honour, drawn from the 1st Battalion, the Canadian Guards. Over archway is new simplified Canadian coat of arms. After the royal salute, the Queen and her husband made their way to the Senate Chamber where the Queen opened Parliament.
