Canada Climbers

Climbers Bradford Washburn, right, and Robert N.H. Bates near the summit of Mount. Lucania in Canada around July 1937. Washburn, 27, of Cambridge, Mass., instructor at Harvard’s Institute of Geographical Exploration, accompanied by Bates, made front-page news in July, by climbing Mount. Lucania, in the Canadian Yukon. Washburn and Bates took a steamer to Valdez, Alaska. On June 18, they took off from Mudflats in a plane, flew across the boundary into Canada and landed safely on Walsh Glacier. From there they set out on their climb, reaching the summit of Mt. Lucania on July 9, and Mt. Steele two days later. Lucania was hitherto the highest unscaled peak in North America. (AP Photo)
