December 29, 2023, Rafah, Gaza Strip, Palestinian Territory: Palestinian painter from Gaza Strip, BASIL AL-MAQOUSI, draws a picture in the southern Gaza Strip city of Rafah. Basil was forced to flee his hometown during Hamas-Israel conflict and took a shelter in Rafah. He painted every day to depict the ordeals his family and people in the Gaza Strip stand during the clashes, and to convey his wish for peace. 85th day since Hamas attacked Israel and Israel attacked back. UN reports massive surge in people fleeing to Rafah as fighting intensifies. As battles continue between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas movement. 187 Palestinians were killed in Israeli air and ground attacks on the Gaza Strip during the past 24 hours. 100,000+ arrived in Rafah in recent days, Ôwell over a millionÕ now seeking safety in Rafah. A city of 200K before. 21,600 Palestinians, the majority women and children, been killed by Israeli forces since October 7. Israel forces have been expanding their ground operations across the strip, where more than 1.9 million surviving Palestinians, have been displaced as a result. Israeli planes bombed refugee camps in Gaza on Saturday as troops and thousands of Palestinians fled their homes, setting the stage for a new year as bloody and destructive as the last three months of 2023. For now there seems little hope of even a temporary break in attacks, even after Egypt hosted leaders for talks this week and pushed plans for a staged break in the war. A senior Hamas official told AP, they are firm in their position that there will be no hostage releases without a permanent ceasefire. Meanwhile Israel, will not accept ending a war, its leaders describe as existential and Òwithout limitÓ. The Israeli prime minister, says Hamas must be destroyed after the brutal attacks of October, when gunmen broke into Israel and murdered 1,200 civilians.
