PRISONERS ESCAPE — View of the exterior of the Don Jail in Toronto, September 8, 1952. In the early hours of September 8, four prisoners escaped from the aging facility. These weren’t any ordinary inmates; the quartet formed the core of the so-called Boyd Gang, a group of desperados who conducted daring bank robberies across Toronto. The escapees were Edwin Alonzo Boyd, presumptive leader of the gang; Lennie Jackson; Willie Jackson (no relation); and Steve Suchan. All had been charged with armed robbery, and Lennie Jackson and Suchan were about to go on trial for murdering a Toronto police officer. On September 16, the group were found on a deserted farm in the Township of North York and recaptured. Suchan and Lennie Jackson were later convicted of murder and hanged on December 16, 1952 in the Don Jail. Credit: The Globe and Mail
THREE MEN ESCAPE FROM DON JAIL, SAW BAR, SLIDE DOWN SHEETS — Exterior of the Don Jail in Toronto at night, illuminated by floodlights, November 4, 1951. Three men, one of them with an artificial foot, squeezed through a hole just over 9 inches by 16 inches after sawing a bar from jail corridor window and made their escape over the wall. The men were Edwin Boyd, 37, of Pickering, ex-commando, awaiting trail on robbery and armed robbery charges; Leonard Jackson, 29, of Humberside Ave., charged with the armed robbery of a Brantford bank; and William Russell Jackson, 25, sentenced to seven years and 20 lashes for robbery with violence. Operating at first as a lone bandit, then later with a gang, Boyd committed several daring bank robberies in the late 1940s and early 1950s, most of them in the Toronto area. Boyd, Willie Jackson, Lenny Jackson and Steve Suchan were dubbed ‘The Boyd Gang’ by the media who sensationalized their crimes. Photo by John Boyd / The Globe and Mail

Palestinian farmers collect okra at a field in Gaza city on July 27, 2022. Okra, Abelmoschus esculentus, known in many English-speaking countries as ladies' fingers or ochro, is a flowering plant in the mallow family. It has edible green seed pods. The geographical origin of okra is disputed, with supporters of West African, Ethiopian, Southeast Asian, and South Asian origins. The plant is cultivated in tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate regions around the world and is a notable part of the cuisine of the Southern United States as well as Middle Eastern cuisine, Indian cuisine, Brazilian cuisine and Sri Lankan cuisine.
