In this July 15, 1967, file photo, a National Guard officer passes the smashed window of a black-owned flower shop in riot-torn Newark, N.J., after a night of looting and violence. The small sign in window reads, "Please!! Negro-Owned Business." Former U.S. Sen. Fred Harris, the last surviving member of the Kerner Commission, says he remains haunted that the panel's recommendations on U.S. race relations and poverty were never adopted, but he is hopeful they will be one day. He strongly feels that poverty and structural racism still enflame racial tensions even as the United States becomes more diverse. (AP Photo, File)
FILE - This July 6, 1967 file photo shows, from left, Peter Tork, Mike Nesmith, David Jones and Micky Dolenz of the musical group The Monkees at a news conference at the Warwick Hotel in New York. Tork, who rocketed to teen idol fame in 1965 playing the lovably clueless bass guitarist in the made-for-television rock band The Monkees, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2019, of complications related to cancer, according to his son Ivan Iannoli. File picture dated May 1968 of Czech-born writer Milan Kundera. A document written by the Czech Communist police claims that author Milan Kundera informed on a purported Western spy in the 1950s, a state-sponsored institute said on Monday, Oct. 13, 2008. Kundera quickly denied the claims. According to the file, published on the institute's Web site, Kundera in 1950 informed on Miroslav Dvoracek, who had been recruited in Germany by the Czech emigre intelligence network to work as a spy against the Communist regime. Dvoracek was arrested and was later sentenced to 22 years in prison and eventually served 14, working in uranium mines. Photo by CTK/ABACAPRESS.COM

A show of hands from London dockers indicating their desire to return to work, during the mass meeting outside the Royal Group of Docks. The meeting was late starting as a loud speaker did not arrive, and Jack Dash (standing on a chair, left), leader of the Port Worker's Liaison Committee, had to shout to make himself heard. The strikers voted for a return to work, but they gave the employers and trade unions until the end of the year to negotiate their demands.
