PREMIUM -- Diana, Princess of Wales, touring a minefield in body armour to see for herself the carnage mines cause, during her visit to Angola. * 31/7/98 Defence Secretary George Robertson said he was implementing a total ban on the use of landmines by British troops to send a "clear signal" to the rest of the world. Mr Robertson will formally announce the ending of an exemption which allows the use of landmines in "exceptional circumstances" in a Commons written answer. The move means the total ban will be in place in time for the anniversary of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales who played a major role in the campaign to outlaw the weapons. 17 August 1998 to accompany package of stories in advance of the first anniversary of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales
